In the near future, a group of war journalists attempt to survive while reporting the truth as the United States stands on the brink of civil war.
Civil War is the latest movie from the brilliant mind of Alex Garland. He brought us excellent movies such as Ex Machina & Annihilation. For this one, he takes a non-science fiction approach but instead goes for the political social thriller. Civil War is about a group of war reporters facing the reality of a fractured America. The story is well written, as it should for an Alex Garland movie. The main intrigue is mainly about a chaotic road trip to Washington, D.C. for these reporters. The cinematography by Rob Hardy is very good also. The performances are excellent, especially for Kirsten Dunst, who plays very well this senior burned-out war reporter. I got very entertain either mentally and visually by this movie. Alex Garland is a very underrated filmmaker who doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. This featured is kind of a mix between Sicario and The Purge. So if you liked both of these movies, it’s a sure win for you. I recommend.
Even if the story is pretty good, there are some elements missing from it. We don’t quite understand the nature of the conflict that created that war. It is briefly mentioned at the beginning of the movie and that’s it. The main plot is more about the characters living through those difficult times. I think they should’ve spent more time explaining the conflict for us to care more about some character’s fate. Also, the ending is pretty quick. I was expecting some kind of aftermath or morality overview at the end.
