The Eternals are a team of ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. When an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows, they are forced to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, the Deviants.
Eternals are the newest additions in the Marvel cinematic universe. From the mind of comic book artist Jack Kirby, this movie explains the origin of the cosmos. It goes deep into the creation of what we know now in the MCU. Academy Award winner, Chloe Zhao is directing this dense story about those extraordinary beings. I didn’t expect much about this film, so I can say that I was satisfied with what I saw. Zhao’s directing focuses on human connections and storytelling instead of the usual Marvel formula. But, don’t worry, there are plenty of actions sequences. The performances are good, and the cinematography is excellent. Having natural sets makes the movie more realistic and grounded. Adding CGI with those natural sets is a good mix in my opinion. Eternals is an important movie for the MCU. It is very informative, and you should definitely not skip it.
The biggest problem in this movie is there are too many characters to develop. The runtime is almost three hours but still, there is not enough time for everything. Having that many characters is almost an impossible task to create some kind of emotional connection. Chloe Zhao manage to do so with a few of them, but the rest is left with no backstory. This movie should have been in two parts at least. Also, the villains called deviants are just not really important to the story. They are left aside in the third act while the main characters focuses on something else. Basically, Eternals is just a big setup movie for what is to come…
