Synopsis

A long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.

The Good

I was fascinated by the grim look of this movie. It looks like another version of the movie the Witch which was superb. The cinematography is almost similar but the story is more focus on Gretel, which explain the backward title. The movie is filmed in a “tube” kinda way. It means that the camera is often close from the face of the characters. Everything is zoomed in and it creates a claustrophobic atmosphere. Alice Krige is as always great in the role of the witch. She seems to enjoy taking those evil roles maybe because she’s fantastic at it.

  • Grim tone and atmosphere.
  • Great performance from Alice Krige.
  • Good camera work.

The Bad

Boredom is the main issue with Gretel & Hansel. The movie is too long and takes a while before some action takes place. For a horror movie, i wasn’t scared at all. We all know the story, but they seemed to stretch the movie so much that you’re not interested anymore by the end.

  • Boring.
  • Way too long.
  • Not Scary.
