Trying to escape her broken past, Sarah O’Neill is building a new life on the fringes of a backwood rural town with her young son Chris. A terrifying encounter with a mysterious neighbour shatters her fragile security, throwing Sarah into a spiralling nightmare of paranoia and mistrust, as she tries to uncover if the disturbing changes in her little boy are connected to an ominous sinkhole buried deep in the forest that borders their home.
The hole in the ground was a surprisingly interesting movie. I didn’t know anything from director Lee Cronin except that he’s the one in charge of the next Evil Dead movie. Yet, he did a good job on this one. The story is simple but the execution is great. He manages to offer some good scares and creepy imagery throughout the film. The performances from the actors are good. The tone and the pacing are what i like best from the film. You get that creepy vibe and you are left wondering what the hell is going on. Your mind is really intrigued on the mystery surrounding this hole. Hole in the ground is a great small horror movie that will not prevent you from sleeping at night.
Despite the good execution, it falls victim to the evil kid cliché. Countless horror movies have that premise and it’s becoming unoriginal. Lead actress, Seána Kerslake has some weird reaction funny faces in certain scenes and that broke the tension for me. Also, the story is left to interpretation.
