Hubie Dubois who, despite his devotion to his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts (and its legendary Halloween celebration), is a figure of mockery for kids and adults alike. But this year, something really is going bump in the night, and it’s up to Hubie to save Halloween.
Hubie Halloween is the newest movie from Adam Sandler and his production company Happy Madison. A lot of familiar faces from other Adam Sandler movies are back in this comedy. The settings and production are solid and gives a good Halloween vibe throughout the film. I had some good laughs and the multiple cameos makes you want to see more. The story has the same formula from previous productions so if you are a big fan of Adam Sandler movies, you won’t be disappointed.
This movie lacks originality because it’s pretty much a rehash of The Waterboy. Even the main character names are similar. Adam Sandler’s performance as Hubert Dubois is just annoying. You barely understand what he says. The premise of the insecure boy who gets bullied and somehow gets the girl at the end is just not working in 2020. It was popular in the 90s but clearly Sandler’s writing team didn’t get the memo. Some jokes are just too juvenile and I think Sandler can do better than that. I’m just trying to say that the magic is gone and it didn’t work for me. Also, there isn’t much of a story here. More of events leading to the end. I feel like Happy Madison productions needs to craft better original comedic stories if they want to stay relevant.
