10 underrated horror movies you probably haven’t seen.

Share

Here are my selections of horror to enjoy this Halloween. These are films that most people haven’t seen.

1 – Behind the mask : The Rise of Leslie Vernon

This movie is unique and very original. It’s a mock documentary/movie about a serial killer who explains is methods for killing people. It is very funny but at the same time kind of frightening. The documentary turns slowly into a real horror slasher movie, which is great. The performances are really good and you are intrigued on what this killer has to say. If you want a good mix of horror and comedy, Behind the mask is what I recommend.

2 – Unsane

It is the movie who was supposedly filmed 100% with an iPhone. I doubt it very much but anyway, the movie is great. The amateur camera aspect brings a lot to this film. It makes an effective creepy effect. Claire Foy gives a tremendous performance about this woman trying to figure out if she’s crazy or not. Good tension and good performances are what makes Unsane a good watch.

3 – Dog soldiers

At first, Dog soldiers looks like a cheap independent movie after a few minutes in, but it is one of the greatest Werewolf movie I have ever seen. The special effects are great, the cast is good and the suspense is excellent. Neil Marshall did an excellent job with a small budget. Great Halloween movie to watch.

4 – Goodnight Mommy

This Austrian horror film was a good surprise. It is creepy from start to finish. It’s about this mother of twins who acts very strangely after she went through a facial surgery. You will be guessing on what’s going on throughout this movie. Effective cinematography and good performances from the twins. It is slow paced but the ending is worth it. Watch it.

5 – Raw

One of the smartest movie about cannibalism, if I can put it that way. Yes, there is gore but not gratuitous. Very well-made, excellent dialogues and a memorable performance from Garance Marillier. Julia Decournau is a very talented director and I’m looking forward on what she does next.

6 – Revenge

A hunting trip that goes horribly wrong. Revenge is a very entertaining movie. Great action and plenty of violence. One of the greatest revenge movie I have seen in the last decade. The editing is great, so is the pacing. Revenge is everything but boring. Good Halloween movie to watch with friends.

7 – Let the right one in

Mysterious and intriguing. This Swedish movie won’t have you scroll on Instagram during its runtime. Stylish and artful, Let the right one in is Swedish cinema at his best. It’s the kind of movie you never get tired to rewatch. Even the American remake is excellent but this version is the one to see.

8 – V/H/S 2

A collection of small horror stories from VHS tapes. All the stories are filmed in POV (Point Of View). Those horror chapters are very violent and may be not suitable for everybody. I loved the way all those chapters are implemented in a bigger story. Good stories, good scares and good effects. The VHS anthology is worth seeing if you’re a horror fanatic but the second one is best out of the bunch.

9 – It follows

How to create great tension with a small budget is what this movie should be called. I have never seen such intense tension in a movie. Very effective, original and scary. It follows will have you check behind your shoulder constantly. Good cinematography and sound. Fun watch for Halloween.

10 – Creep

The title says it all, it’s creepy as hell. Mark Duplass really owns this movie. His performance is spot on excellent as a creepy guy. Similar to VHS, it is all made in POV. They effectively create a horror atmosphere and great tension with just a few characters. Creep is pretty much a blueprint on how to make a horror movie with no budget. Very impressive work from Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass.
