Synopsis

Plagued by strange memories, Neo's life takes an unexpected turn when he finds himself back inside the Matrix.

The Good

Matrix is back after so many years. This franchise was a game changer in the world of special effects. Everybody remembers the jaw-dropping bullet time sequence from the first movie. As a big Matrix fan, I was excited to see what director Lana Wachowski had in mind for this fourth installment. The casting is excellent, Keanu Reeves is once again reprising the role of Neo and Carrie-Ann Moss as Trinity. Jessica Henwick and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are among the new additions to the cast. This movie brings a great deal of nostalgia and doesn’t shy away from previous installments. In fact, this movie explains very well the aftermath of Matrix Revolutions. As of production, cinematography is still good and VFX are pretty decent. Matrix Resurrections is a walk on memory lane to previous Matrix movies and has a promising new cast for sequels.

  • Good performance from Jessica Henwick.
  • Good cinematography.
  • Aftermath of Matrix Revolutions are well explained.

The Bad

The Matrix Resurrections doesn’t feel like a Matrix movie. It lacks the basics and coolness of previous Matrix installments. First, there is practically no martial arts in this movie. The action scenes are mostly gun fights, but when it comes to physical combat, it’s boring as hell. Martial arts is a fundamental part of the Matrix universe. If I remember correctly, every character as martial arts knowledge uploaded, but it seems they forgot about it. Also, the story is trying to be too clever. The story is very self-aware, and It feels like Lana Wachowski didn’t want to do this movie at all. It’s relying way too much on previous footage. Also, irrelevant old characters coming back is just a lack of creativity in my opinion. We already had 3 movies on how everything works in the Matrix, we don’t need another monologue about what is the Matrix. As of the casting, Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving presence are crucially missing. They didn’t seem to understand how Laurence Fishburne’s performance gave so much credibility to the Matrix franchise. His way of explaining everything added so much maturity and respect. Anyway, nobody in the cast seems to bring such an impact. Another thing missing is a creative soundtrack from Rob Dougan. His music added so much chills to every action sequences in previous movies. Maybe he was unavailable, but at least make a soundtrack that is exciting. The production is good, but the locations are terrible. It seems like everything is happening in one city block. Matrix Resurrections is a big disappointment in my opinion. It doesn’t bring excitement, action nor any outstanding VFX. It’s definitely the worst of the bunch. I think it’s time for another director to continue the franchise.

  • No kung fu or martial arts.
  • Story trying to be too clever.
  • Fishburne and Weaving missing.
  • Rely on too much old footage.
  • No groundbreaking VFX.
  • Forgettable Soundtrack.
  • Filming locations could’ve been better.
