Synopsis

Four immortal mercenaries who've secretly protected humanity for centuries become targeted for their mysterious powers just as they discover a new immortal.

The Good

Charlize Theron gives a solid performance in this Netflix movie. She leads this movie with ease and it shows. We can feel the bond of the group and you believe that they are somehow a family. That’s mainly because of Charlize Theron charisma. She really is the heart of this whole film. The action sequences are good enough and can be entertaining. Technically the movie is fine. The old guard can be a good watch on a Sunday afternoon.

  • Charlize Theron’s lead.
  • Good action sequences.

The Bad

Where to begin… oh yeah, it’s a total rip-off from Highlander but with rules that makes no sense. The movie doesn’t have a story, it has events. We don’t know what’s the goal or purpose of the old guard. They just stand there and wait to get killed and then revive and then killed and then revived and then… you get the point! They make situations to create excuses to have them die. Also, they never really explain why they are immortal. They just are. The villain is laughable. He’s the typical corporate guy who’s just evil for no reason. This whole series of events could’ve been avoided if he just asked what he wanted. The old guard lacks explanation in the story and logic in the rules. Without Charlize Theron, the old guard is uninteresting.

  • Highlander rip-off.
  • No story.
  • No logic in rules.
  • One dimensional villain.
