Synopsis

After making a harrowing escape from war-torn South Sudan, a young refugee couple struggle to adjust to their new life in a small English town that has an unspeakable evil lurking beneath the surface.

The Good

His House is a movie to discover. At first, this film doesn’t seem to be the horror type. It has all the elements of a social drama about refugees. However, It turns real quick into something fascinating. The director, Remi Weekes, did a wonderful job merging social drama and horror genre into one. His house gives you scares, chills and social awareness about how refugees are mistreated and taken advantages of. The story is very well told. You feel the struggles this couple has to endure in society while facing their own demons. The movie is very well shot, especially for a low budget horror movie. The director creates great tension by using smart camera tricks similar to what Mike Flanagan did on Netflix’s House Of Haunted Hill. Jump scares are also very effective and keeps you on edge throughout the movie. Both lead actors were spectacular in their performances and I hope to see them in other projects soon. Overall, His House is an excellent movie. It will scare you sometimes but will also make you reflect on the real horrors a lot of immigrants has to face.

  • Good balance between Horror and drama.
  • Good tension.
  • Great performances from leads.
  • Good story.

The Bad

Ending could’ve been better. The story is good but didn’t quite explain the origin of evil. Also, scare factor loses effectiveness toward the end.

  • Better ending.
  • More explanation needed.
  • Scare factor falls flat toward the end.
