Synopsis

In his second year of fighting crime, Batman uncovers corruption in Gotham City that connects to his own family while facing a serial killer known as the Riddler.

The Good

Batman is back, but this time it’s Robert Pattinson who takes the helm of the cape crusader. Matt Reeves, who did an exceptional job with the last 2 Planet of the apes movies, is directing this new vision of The Batman story. Reeves manage to bring a much more gritty version of Batman. Every aspect of this movie is grounded and close to realism. I really loved how Gotham city is portrayed. The city looks very dirty and filled with criminals and corruption. Also, Robert Pattinson’s performance as Batman is excellent. He is very intimating and has great screen presence. Paul Dano as The Riddler, Colin Farrell as The Penguin and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon gives outstanding performances in this film. Matt Reeves really did his homework and gave a near comic book accurate Batman movie. Focusing on Batman’s detective skills, the story shows a different aspect of the superhero. The production for this movie is good. Every scene is well shot, and the soundtrack goes well with the tone of the movie. The Batman is a great achievement and gives a fresh start for the franchise. Can’t wait to see what’s next for The Dark Knight.

  • Good directing.
  • Comic book accurate Batman.
  • Great performances from most of the cast.
  • Great depiction of Gotham.
  • Good soundtrack.

The Bad

The movie was a little too dark for me. You can barely see anything, especially during action sequences. I understand Reeve’s intention was to give a certain visual tone, but I believe clarity is really important to fully understand everything. Also, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone didn’t work for me. He didn’t seem like a menacing crime boss in my opinion. Besides, the movie was too long. Some scenes could’ve been shorten without affecting the motion picture. The side story with Catwoman was a distraction from the main story. The Riddler’s investigations were complex enough and were sufficient for a whole movie. Furthermore, this film is missing a thrilling action scene. Every action sequences are good, but didn’t give me any goosebumps or excitement. That’s why I believe the rewatch value will be low for most people. Also, a certain individual is tease but unnecessary in my opinion. The Batman is not a masterpiece, but still a pretty good flick.

  • Visually too dark.
  • Too long.
  • John Turturro is miscast as Carmine Falcone.
  • Unimportant side story.
  • Needs a memorable action scene.
  • Low rewatch value.
  • Forced cameo.
